Old Blog Archive found -- includes another attempt to blog a STORY.

I found a portion of an archived copy of my original attempt to BLOG -- Nathan aka Na_Kibler prompted me to attempt blogging -- ( I gave him that nickname all those years ago although I don't recall if he ever knew that.) I decided to re-input this portion into this blog even though it throws off the time lines. It's a fragmented view because I had two separate blog a personal view and a more public Blog. I could not figure out how to reintegrate the older blog so I inserted it at the beginning of this one and moved only the story forward.

I am glad I was able to find this archive because it contained another story I was working on and accidental deleted my working copy -- I had not decided on a title for this story!

Preface:

Iris sighed as she finished reading the latest book about the boy wizard, she waited three years to read the continuing adventures of his magical schooling. Why were so many stories about boys having such adventures she thought? Iris pondered about other stories she enjoyed reading. The tales were many. She fondly thought about far away land that required a boy to give its child like ruler an a new name in order that all would be as it once was and where the dreams and wishes of children seemed to intertwine with that fantastic place. Where the reader a boy read the story, which in the end included him as being part of the story itself.

Then there was the boy who had a knife that allowed him to travel between similar distance lands that seemed to be a mixture of science and magic. Sure there were other stories which included two boys and two girls visiting a magical land where animals talked like you and I. But this seemed the exception to the boy hood hero stories she read about. The boys in all these stories seemed to have a common theme they were outsiders or odd. Stories that had girls were rather common. The girl and her prized horse! The girl detective stories. It seemed as if all the girl stories were none as exciting as the stories that had boys as its main characters. Iris almost forgot about the girl who went over the rainbow. But magical stories that involved girls seem few and far between. Or so she thought!

Chapter One: Sky-Fire

Iris was an ordinary girl for her age. Being eleven and on summer holiday how was she was going to pass the time since she finishing reading about Harry in record time? Brent her father worked for a software company, on the other side of the lake from their home in Ballard. Carole her mother worked as a nurse at one of Seattle’s largest hospital Swedish. Being an only child in this family have its disadvantaged and since the Conwell family consisted of a few distance relatives in Montana whom none had any children her age only added to her isolation. Iris Conwell was bored, how was she going to endure another two months of not being in school. Sandra who was charged with being her nanny tried to think of interesting things for the two of them to do together, but how much fun did going to the library or the Seattle Center amount to. Yes she was looking forward to the up coming 4th of July holiday. Both her mom and dad had promised that they would take the holiday off and use the family boat to watch the firework from Lake Union. “Iris are you ready yet” called Sandra from the living room. “I told Keith and Wendy we would pick them up at Ten O’clock”. Going to the amusement park, how could it compare to the adventures her boy hero’s had? The “Enchanted Village” seemed to be rather dull destination. Iris dreaded the thought Keith and Wendy going along. The young couple could hardly keep themselves from talking about their latest trip to Victoria. How many times would they talk about taking the clipper to the island? Iris endured the details about how interesting it was to finally travel out of the country without their parents while the group of them sat near the international fountain in the Seattle Center trying to escape the heat of the summer only yesterday. “I’m almost ready,” shouted Iris as she picked up her backpack. She was almost downstairs when she realized she left her iPod in its charger in her room. She raced back up stairs to get the Mp3 player. She only hoped that her father had not downloaded different songs she like oldies from her father’s music collection, listening to Erasure, Depeche Mode or even Alphaville would be better the listening to Keith and Wendy recount their trip again. She rushed downstairs to find Sandra half way up the second flight of stairs. Evidently she was getting impatient with Iris who now was out of breath as she said “Sorry I almost forgot my iPod, I want to be able to listen to it while we go to Enchanted Village” “Ok” Sandra said as she turned around and headed back downstairs. “I just want to get an early start out. Traffic is likely to be a nightmare since KIRO said it was going to be in the mid eighties again today”

Iris grabbed the Seattle Times off the hallways bench she had not yet read her horoscope this morning she had been absorbed with finishing up the Harry Potter book. Iris buckled in the passengers side of the Conwell’s SUV. When they arrived in Magnolia Wendy and Keith were waiting for them sitting on the porch of Keith’s parents. It was then that Iris decided that she would sit in the back. Where she had more options to either stare out the window while listening to her iPod or she could watch Lilo and Stitch on the portable DVD player she had gotten for her birthday in early March. At least it was a cartoon about a girl who was managing to have an adventure. The trip to Enchanted Village was fret with traffic diversions and delays as the 1st Avenue Bridge went up as Sandra. While they waited for the bridge to go down Wendy asked, “Iris is it true you and your family are going to watch the 4th of July fire works from Lake Union?” No sure why Wendy cared Iris replied, “Yea, both mom and dad say they are taking the day off, why?” “Sandra said that she is going out of town that weekend and that she thought that since she would not be joining your family that perhaps your mom and dad would let me and Keith come along.” Replied Wendy. “Its not my boat, answered Iris you could ask my dad I don’t know if he is inviting anyone or not.” Iris dreaded the thought of spending time with two lovebirds and her parents on a boat. Now would be a good time to plug into her iPod and ignore more questions from Wendy. She selected random play and put her headphones on to hear Bizarre Love Triangle by New Order emit to her listening pleasure. The trip to the amusement took another half hour and as usual Iris found herself being ushered around by Sandra and the lovebirds not far behind. Iris tried to look as though she was enjoying herself but in spite of Sandra’s attempts to entertain her. She could not help but loathe the fact the Keith and Wendy seemed to inseparable, the hand holding and snickering notwithstanding the kissing that the two of them were constantly engaging seemed to annoy Iris. Iris was thrilled when Sandra suggested that Keith and Wendy could go and do their own thing for two and half hours after which they should call her on the cell phone and make arrangements to meet so they could go home. Iris being eleven wanted so much to go on about being a kid with out Wendy and Keith showing so much public displays of affection for each other. Needless to say that the afternoon went by fast and soon Iris found herself listening to her iPod listening to the Human League sing “Only Human” while they traveled home. Iris then suddenly remember she had yet to read her horoscope she found the Times and located the horoscope page and read the following:

PISCES: (Feb. 19-March 20) Good week to investigate options that are outside your personal comfort zone. There are stellar opportunities for you connected with the academic world, travel, foreign lands. Exciting new career/financial developments in store. Monday through Wednesday, a sensible approach to advancement moves you steadily toward material success. Your lucky numbers are 2, 8, 15, 30 and 49.

Cryptic as always Iris wished she could locate a horoscope written for young adults. When she got home maybe she’d search Google. The trip home was uneventful and she was only too glad when Sandra dropped off the lovebirds at last. Sandra pulled into the Conwell’s driveway only to find that neither Carole nor Brent were home yet. It was then that Iris asked “can we order pizza from Romeo’s.” “Sure said Sandra what would you like?” “Anything replied Iris as long as it has pepperoni on it.” As dusk approached and Iris was eating the recent delivered pizza on the terrace when she noticed a shooting star. Remembering something about the horoscope mentioning something about stellar and travel Iris closed her eyes and wish “I want to be involved in a fantastic adventure to a distance far away land”! She was not sure that one could wish upon a shooting star or was that limited to the first star on saw any given night? As if some thing or someone had heard Iris suddenly there was a loud bang. As she opened her eyes she thought she saw the golden sparkling glow with a brilliant purple hue if only for a moment as the shooting star seemed to have exploded somewhere above Discovery Park. Iris would have thought that someone had set off a pre-holiday firework if it were not for the sweet smell of something that she could not describe as perfume and the fact in the distance there seemed to a purplish glow across the night sky arching toward the distant park. Iris called to Sandra “Come look at this.” “What” questioned Sandra as she came out the patio doors? “Look at that purple arc in the sky and that strange glow above Discovery Park” replied Iris. To which Sandra said “really Iris you do have quite the imagination I don’t seem anything” “What about the sweet smell or the loud bang surly heard that.” Iris said. “Iris the only thing I smell is someone blowing off fireworks and as for a purple arc its all just fireworks.” Sandra turned towards the kitchen and hurrying as she could hear the phone ringing. Iris shrugged and thought well I it was my wish not hers. Maybe she was the only one who could smell the sweet scent and see the arc in the sky. Little did Iris know that wishing on a shooting star during the purple hour indeed set in motion events, which would lead her upon an adventure of her own!

First there was a loud booming noise followed by a brilliant explosion of purple light, which drew the attention of Cillo away from his star charts. As the centaur adjusted his telescope his view was obstructed by a flock of the Kings doves flying by. For some strange reason the loud booming noise was so intense that the doves awoke from their roost in some strange panic as Cillo focused his telescope on the night sky. The aged centaur observed the remainder of falling star in his telescope and returned to his star charts where he made a notation in the margin with the Phoenix quill. Quickly returning his eye to the telescope focusing it and muttering under his breath as the doves obstructed his view of the night sky once again. “Strange!” was the only word he uttered as he continued to view the night sky from his quarters. Jorge burst through the door with such a clamor that the centaur frowned at the Prince who had forgotten to knock before entering his teacher’s quarters in the castles southern Hightower. “Cillo did you hear and see that falling star?” inquired the Prince who was out of breath having skipped every other stone step on his way up from a lower landing. “I did your Jorge, however I might remind you that as your teacher that bursting in onto private quarters of even your teacher without knocking is not becoming of a Prince” replied Cillo in answer to the question from his student. “Sorry!” exclaimed the Jorge who gazed at the floor in embarrassment. “Its just that you were telling me a forth night ago that it has been a long time since the sky-fire last seen in Elumgor” spoke the Prince. “It has yet to determined if this falling star is sky-fire if it is and I repeat if I am not sure that we can expect the out come to be know for a few days.” “We are far away from the circle of stones which usually cry out after the sky-fire erupts.” “Besides it has been many generations since there has been sky-fire”. “I find it unusual that the Prince remembers our ancient history while forgetting lessons in manners that is to say I am thrilled that at least some of what your father entrusted me to teach is being remembered” recanted Cillo! To which Jorge answered “I find history the waves of visitors to our land from the other side more interesting then classes in manners”. “Come lets inform his majesty, your father that perhaps its time to journey to the circle of stones” spoke Cillo as he gathered his star charts seemly ignoring the Prince’s last comment. Jorge glanced outside at the night sky, which usually was black instead seeing only purple with golden sparkles where stars should be as he suddenly found himself alone in Cillo’s quarters as. He turned to follow his teacher’s now distant clomping hooves down towards the library where his father was generally to be found before he retired to his chamber for the night.
