Hey jason.  From billings i got a ride to sheridan, wyoming with a guy in an escalade.  he had a hotel suite and offered me the living room couch, so i stayed in sheridan and saw the town a little bit.  from there i ended up getting dropped off in the middle of nowhere and had to walk a couple miles to find a spot to hitch.  once i got to the onramp i caught a ride with a guy from rhode island who's been road tripping around the country and down to mexico for over a month.  he was coming from yellowstone and on his way to canada via the upper peninsula of michigan.  he wanted to see all of the "americana and all that shit" so we stopped at the sturgis, sd harley davidson store (apparently a mecca for bikers), we stopped at wall drug which is more like a mall than a drug store, and then in austin, mn we visited the spam museum.  he was very excited.  the place was a giant spam commercial with a gift shop that sold spam merchandise at a mark up the likes of which i've never seen.  after eating my first and probably last spam burger, i fell into a nitrate-induced nap and woke up somewhere in wisconsin.  he headed north, i hitched south.  since then i've been getting mostly short rides in small towns.  now i'm hanging out on a farm in corbin, ky with some hippies who picked me up yesterday.  its been over 90 degrees since illinois, but i've managed to avoid the sun enough to avoid any real damage.  i should be able to make it to the rainbow gathering in the next couple of days, and from there i really don't know which direction i'll be going.  i hope you had a good time with your family and are enjoying the washington summer.  i'll keep you posted on my continued travels.
